IL Lottery is $68,000,000 today!

February 19, 2010

Some days of starting a new business is definately 1 step forward, 2 steps back.

We met with this fantastic pattern-maker yesterday, only to discover we are not as far along as we had thought and that we probably cannot afford her!   Technically, a clothing pattern maker is responsible for developing and creating patterns, and to conceptualize their patterns, ideally using CAD, to create pattern models.  We’ve been told that finding the right pattern maker is key.  Little did we know that they are like “architects or lawyers” of the fashion industry.  What she means is that once we step through her door, the dollars start flowing from our pockets!

We knew that her rate was $100 per hour and were prepared to pay for her advice – she does come highly recommended.  We all agreed beforehand that we’d watch the clock and get the most  out of our dollar, or hundred.  But little did we know that her invoice would include the time we spent in her parking lot, hanging up our coats, using her ladies room, chit chatting about the weather, Mayor Daley & her interesting father, waiting for her to prepare our tea, etc.

We did get a lot of good information from her, most if it meaning we have a lot more work to do and the things we’ve checked off our list need to be unchecked, including the need to tour more factories – which are always exciting – but just once, can a factory not be in prime drug-dealer area…I’m sure this will be featured in an upcoming blog – please let it be on my day!  But we are also planning a trip to NYC to look at more fabrics – so while more money, I can justify this cost – I love NYC.  (Does anyone have a spare bed in Manhattan that we can use?)

As we wait for her estimate and hope the other pattern-maker we’re meeting next week is equal in capabilities and half the price, we are preparing to make our meetings more efficient…..We will need to eliminate sitting, drinking, bathroom breaks, keep our coats on, any non-essential talking – who really cares about the weather!?, use shorter words and who really needs conjunctions, commas, etc.

Better yet – let’s all buy a lottery ticket today!  Enjoy your weekend and see you on Monday!

I think it was a speciality tea — one of the technical teas from Japan
