Isner wins and burns off 8000 calories!

Photo Titled Mahut in disbelief

Originally I was going to write about all of the scuttlebut in London as to whether Brit Andy Murray would bow when he met the Queen, her first visit to Wimbledon in years.  It was constantly in the news while I was there – would he or wouldn’t he?  Yawn!

Thankfully, as I was boarding a plane at Heathrow, an epic battle on lowly court 18 was about to begin.  Some of you may have heard about the 11 hours and five absorbing minutes on court that John Isner won vs. Nicholas Mahut.  They broke the longest match by a mile and into the record books as the winner of the sport’s longest ever battle when Isner finally clinched the epic three-day, 183-game thriller 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-3), 70-68.

It’s an amazing story and one that I doubt will be repeated.  It did get me thinking about how long that was.  From the time they started their match on Tuesday and finished in on Thursday, I completed a transatlantic flight then made it through customs and baggage claim in O’Hare (an epic feat in its own right – why are my bags always the last off the flight?), and then started unpacking and loads of laundry and they still would have two more days to play!

The next day – Spinner and I played tennis for the team a level above us.  Oh, the agony of defeat!  Our first of the season.  Then off to Target to get the long list of stuff my oldest son needs for his sports camp starting this Sunday – why does everyone have to bring their own box fan?   Then watched the finale of The Tudors, as I missed it whilst in London.  (Fantastic series – highly recommended!)  Still Isner and Mahut would have another day of  tennis.

Finally, Thursday – Certainly, it must be over soon.  Spinner and I off to dominate another sport as we ventured out with our golf foursome.

Our golf result – We didn’t stink, nor were we last!  Though I do think we’ll give credit to the other 2 ladies – the Chris’s, since we were playing best ball.  Play did improve when Chris #1 suggested a detour at the half-way house for John’s magical punch!  Not sure it improved our game, but we didn’t really care anymore!

Finally, at lunch that followed we heard that Isner finally won that epic match.  Now that’s a lot of tennis!

Now what was he going to do with that 8000 calorie deficit?  I would head over to the nearest Italian and would not feel guilty about eating all of the bread in the basket before the meal arrived – Isner had a recovery shake!  ‘Tho Andy Roddick did go out and bring him a takeout to the locker room.

During the match, he reportedly munched on a couple of bananas and a lot of Clif Bars – It looks like he could get himself a new sponsor!  I hope the marketing people at Clif Bars have already contacted his agent!

Have a Smashing weekend!

PS.  Andy Murray did indeed bow to the Queen!

Absolutely incredible match! Apparently Roddick carb-loaded Isner after day 2 – maybe it helped him pull it out in day 3.
