What Cocktail goes w/ Halls Mentho Lyptus???

July 30, 2010

We’ve had quite a few successes this last week or so that Spinner decided that we need a little celebration at our usual Wednesday evening status meeting, so out comes the bottle of champagne.  Now I LOVE champagne.  One time my house in London was burgled and a lot of electronics and jewelry was stolen, but I think I was most upset when I discovered that they had taken the case of Pommery Champagne that I had brought home from their vineyard.

But back on track –  I believe that the drink should enhance the food and I had a cough drop for dinner – it was really hard to imagine them complimenting each other.  Spinner had a PBJ sandwich – I wasn’t really sure about that either.  Ace is pregnant – so she will just had to savor the tablespoon we put in her glass.  But what the heck – It’s champagne afterall and I wasn’t going to refuse and everything goes with champagne, right?  Nope!

So I decided that I would have to celebrate with my go to drink when I’m feeling under the weather – Gin & Tonic.  I seriously believe that there are medicinal qualities in that drink.  I don’t know if it’s the lime, the quinine in the tonic or the juniper in the gin – but the combination of the 3 really does help with congestion.  Seriously….Year ago at a business lunch in Hong Kong I was feeling a bit congested and the client suggest a G&T and assured me there was truly medicinal properties – 20 years later and I still swear by this ancient Chinese cure.  Doctors don’t understand Chinese medicine – but studies have proven that some of them do work.  Don’t ask me to cite the studies and let’s ignore the fact that the client in Hong Kong was actually an English ex-pat….this is my story and I’m sticking to it!

We got a lot done that evening…Spinner had her second course of pretzels for dinner w/ her champagne, Ace licking the glass with her tablespoon of champagne and I with my G&T.  We picked a button – a bigger deal than you can imagine, agreed a new logo, did the preliminary designs for our second line, agreed our hang tags and our schedule fo the next couple weeks.  Life was good!

But this all got me to thinking that there must be a traditional tennis cocktail.  That brought me back to summertime in London and at Wimbledon it’s a Pimm’s Cocktail and if you haven’t had one – you must try one.  Since the original Pimm’s No. 1 was made using gin, quinine and a secret mixture of herbs as an aid to digestion – will also want to add this to your medicine cabinet.  So here’s the recipe for a Pimms No. 1

Take a jug or glass and fill it with ice, mix one part Pimm’s No. 1 with 3 parts chilled ginger ale or lemon-lime soda, add some mint &  cucumber spears.  Feel free to add some strawberries for color.  Enjoy – Ideally on a warm, sunny day watching tennis or even cricket.

Have a Smashing weekend!

PS  A word of advice – Don’t let Mr Spinner get you a refill to your G&T.  I’m not sure that there was any tonic, definitely no lime, thus leaving me with a G&G!
