We are not Worthy

November 18, 2011

Let me start by saying that I hate rejection. Lance Armstrong observed that “A boo is a lot louder than a cheer.”

You may recall several months ago that we were considering placing a video on the funding site Kickstarter.  Essentially, you make a video that begs for money to fund your start-up project and interested folk could donate small amounts in exchange for a tchotchke – similar to the NPR pledge drive.

Spinner and I kicked around some funny & compelling video ideas over the summer sitting around the pool – why does that seem so long ago? We back-burnered it for a while, as other priorities came, but we dusted off the idea a couple of weeks ago as a creative way to fund some of our more ambitious marketing plans.  So we brainstormed and outlined a very clever, compelling and funny video – of course it’s November and we were not by a pool with a G&T – so probably not as good as the first version.

So to the Kickstarter site to look at some guidelines and it appears that we need to have our project approved first.  Hmm, why hadn’t we noticed that requirement first?  Must just be a technicality to keep out the rift raft.  So we look at the proposal form and we  have about one sentence to convince them to approve us – certainly this confirms that it’s not a big deal.  So we fill out the form and tell them we need some cash for marketing and by the way, we’re funny, creative and smart and they would be lucky to have our project.  (OK – It was a bit more professional.)

In record time, I receive the following email:

“Thank you for taking the time to share your idea. Unfortunately, this isn’t the right fit for Kickstarter. We receive many project proposals daily and review them all with great care and appreciation. We see a wide variety of inspiring ideas, and while we value each one’s uniqueness and creativity, Kickstarter is not the right platform for all of them. We wish you the best of luck as you continue to pursue your endeavor.”

I happen to be with Spinner when I get this message and in disbelief I show it to her waiting for her to commiserate with me, since the money was going to help her marketing efforts and now will have to resort to smoke signals.  She responds that we’re probably to successful already for them, so forget about it.  She earns her nickname daily, but that was one of her better spins and she’s got me convinced.

So I guess we’re to successful for handouts and I need to then go back to work on the financials to put together a more traditional investment proposal.  But if there are any Angel Investors out there that will invest in Smashing with just a funny video, rather than me having to spend days in numbers – we would love to talk to you.  We might even give you a Smashing G&T travel mug for your effort.

Have a Smashing Weekend!
