Smashing’s new line – “Flat Stanley” shirts

April 16, 2012

Happy Monday – It’s a rainy, dreary day here in Chicago.

For those of you that don’t know the Flat Stanley books – here’s a quick synopsis by that fount of all knowledge Wikipedia. “Stanley Lambchop and his younger brother Arthur are given a big bulletin board by their Dad for displaying pictures and posters. He hangs it on the wall over Stanley’s bed. During the night the board falls from the wall, flattening Stanley in his sleep. He survives and makes the best of his altered state, and soon he is entering locked rooms by sliding under the door, and playing with his younger brother by being used as a kite. One special advantage is that Flat Stanley can now visit his friends by being mailed in an envelope. Stanley even helps catch some art museum thieves by posing as a painting on the wall. Eventually Arthur changes Stanley back to his proper shape with a bicycle pump.”

You may be wondering, “Now what does this have to do with Golf & Tennis apparel?” and/or “Has she run out of ideas”?  (Well the latter may also be true, I originally started a blog today called “Nice Shot!”, but it went nowhere.)

I was visiting the factory doing some QA on items currently in production and while I was wrapping things up, the sewing supervisor mentioned that there was something wrong with our new Michelle patterns.  What?!? I had just signed off and paid for these, and the guys were currently loading them into my SUV.

Actually, she mentions that the system cut twice as many fronts than needed, as there was an error on the pattern. (The layout and cutting is automated, so they didn’t realize until afterwards.)  Hmm?  I’m thinking this is not good, as we’re in the process of using up the last of this season’s color and ordering new colors for the next season, and now I have double the number of shirts.  So I say, OK – let’s take a look.

“Oh, let me see if we still have them, we might have thrown them out!”  Argh – We’re a start-up and every inch of fabric is valuable – hence the coordinating headbands on our website.  Fortunately, we found them and she’s right – we have 100’s of spare shirt fronts.  I make an executive decision and instruct them to cut the coordinating backs and turn them into complete shirts – so I’m really hoping that these are a big seller, we’ve going to have extra.  (BTW  These are my favorite top – I wear them all the time in warm weather, very flattering!)

However, there is one color that we’re wrapping up and do not want to order 1000 yards more – so we have a few shirts that are only fronts.  So if there’s anyone out there that only wears the front of their shirts, have I got a deal for you!

Have a Smashing Monday!

PS In case you’re wondering what you missed out on my first blog – Nice Shot!  Spinner and I are having a challenging tennis year playing together, we’ve lost too many really close matches this year together.  We were in the midst of a deja vu match on Friday, when she declared she had enough of this BS.  “OK, I say – Let’s not lose!”  Seemingly, it’s as easy as that….the very next shot was awesome.  But the funny part is that she yelled out, “Nice shot!” to herself.  You don’t hear that everyday.  But we won, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 in a great nail biter of a tie-breaker.  The best part, this is the first place team where we lost to them 1-6, 2-6, just a few weeks ago!  So nice shot!
