Smashing is Buying Porn

September 17, 2012

I have to admit, it’s taken me awhile to write this blog.  This actually happened about a month ago, but I’ve needed intensive therapy after the incident.  You’ll see why.

One of our priorities for the summer was to boost our Twitter followers.  We have quite an extensive email marketing list (well into the thousands) but our social media following just didn’t seem to match what our email list consisted of.  We specifically wanted to boost our Twitter followers to attract some more media, clubs, etc to start following our story.

Since I have a marketing budget equal to Rob Pattinson’s IQ since he took Kristen Stewart back, I decided to look for some nontraditional ways of boosting our Twitter following.

So late one night I stumbled across a site called FiveRR.  For those of you not familiar with the site, this is a list of things people are willing to do for $5.  There was everything on this site from people making clown videos, to designing logos, to voiceovers.  And then I spotted it — a promise for 50 new Twitter followers.  How could I resist?

Now I know it sounds too good to be true, and believe me I thought the same thing.  But I figured it’s $5 — what harm could it do?

I pay the $5 via PayPal and wait the 24 hours for the entourage of new followers to show on Twitter.

Sure enough, by the next day we had 50 new followers.  Woo Hoo!!

I call Boss all excited.  She clearly is not as thrilled as she says, “Did you look to see who these new followers are?”

“No,” I reply cautiously.

“Well you might want to look at our new “friends.” she replies laughing hysterically

I pull up the page and my traditional Catholic upbringing was rocked to its core.  There was a list of followers that were all porn stars.  How do I know this?  I clicked on their profiles.  My eyes will never be the same.

Always a glass is half full person I say, “Well porn stars play golf too.”

Boss, always quick with a quip replies, “Yes, but do they wear clothes then?”

Sigh

Boss begins removing the porn stars from our page as we really don’t want constant messages from them inviting us to various things.

In the meantime, we are back to our humble Twitter following and will put the singles back in our wallets.
